Wes Anderson, shot by Mark Abrahams.
I'm always a sucker for a good portrait; there's something about being able to capture a subject's persona that I really appreciate. I think the lighting definitely adds to that, making him look sort of enigmatic.
Also, Wes Anderson is a lot cuter than I thought he'd be.

I don't think I posted a blog entry on Monday so here is another blog entry

After some scouring of google, I regret to say that I can't find the source of this image.
But I had to post it.
Look at  them.
They look like they belong in an anime from the 90s.

A second appearance from Die Antwoord on my blog.
Shot by Ellen von Unwerth for Interview Magazine.
I really like the use of flash in this image; it gives it a certain emotion and brightness without the nagging suspicion of lost detail. The photo still has a lot of fine detail and texture while looking polished.
And seriously, if you don't love this photo and this band you can just keep your mouth shut because they kawaii.

I don't feel like looking for someone else's work, so here's a picture I took of the sky and whatever. It's ridiculously difficult to take pictures of the tops of buildings, yet I keep attempting to do it...

"Spinning"
Found on Flickr at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phengyao/6313910144/
I love long-exposure photos, especially when they make use of light-streaks. I also like that it's so crisp, in spite of its long shutter-speed.

"Trafalgar Square" by Matt Stuart, shot in 2006.
This is such a perfectly-timed photograph. It's sharp, fairly well-composed, and cute without being cutesy.

"Nightglow" by Mikko Lagerstedt. It's pretty intense HDR, but I really like it for the sort of mystical quality it has.

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

A photo taken by Fubirai on the island of Fukuoka in Japan, commonly called "Cat Heaven Island." I really like the effect of the wide-angle lens; it makes the background very interesting to look at.

Justice shot by Jean Baptiste Mondino. I like how the high detail and wide tonal range make the picture look sort of unreal.
Also Justice.

"Dali Atomicus" by Philippe Halsman, shot in 1948. Everyone loves surrealist photography, and this is just aout as surreal as it gets without Photoshop getting involved.  The composition is nonexistant, but there's enough visual intrigue to make it appealing to look at.

A daguerrotype of Phineas Gage, circa 1850. We learned about him in psych the other day.
The quality of the photograph is rather impressive considering its age. The amount of detail in particular is striking, apparent in the wrinkles of his jacket and the scars on his face.
I am really pleased with myself because I know how to spell daguerrotype.

Make-Up Blog Part One

A picture I took after I lost power during the hurricane. I like the strange glow around the light. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a better picture because my camera ran out of battery.

Elliott Smith shot by Autumn de Wilde. I actually own a book of her photographs, and this is one of my favorites. I really like the composition, even though his head is cut-off at the top. I also like the utilization of depth-of-field.
Also, Elliott Smith is pretty much the only person that's ever even mattered to me, so.

"U.A. Walker, New York" by Hiroshi Sugimoto. I like the wide tonal range and fine detail of this photo. It almost looks unreal, like a diorama or something out of an "I Spy" book.

On a semi-related note, am I the only one who found those books a little creepy as a kid?
Really, that's a legitimate question.

The best picture I managed to get at the zoo. It's sharp, well-composed, and pretty cute, which is really the best you can hope for in that setting. My favorite aspect of the photo is the texture in the wood and the squirrel's fur.

"Alternative Landscape" by Benoit Paille, the artist I'm presenting on. The composition is nice, and the lighting is perfect; it almost looks somehow real.

Thursday, October 11, 2012

A photo by Alix Malka. I really like the sense of movement in this photo, as well as its wide tonal range. The colour scheme is also very appealing.
I would really recommend giving Alix Malka's work a look. Fashion photography can be sort of tiresome, but all of his work is beautiful and distinctive.

I didn't feel like looking for someone else's work, so I'm just putting up a photo I took a couple weeks ago. I kind of like it, but probably just as much for the memories associated as any actual substance in the image. I do like the muted colours and the texture of the wall.

"USA, Santa Monica, California" by Elliot Erwitt. I like that this picture tells a story. It almost looks like it could be out of a movie. My favorite part of this image is the unusual perspective, which seems somehow surreal.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

A photo by Lee Friedlander. It's very surreal and a little creepy, yet beautiful. IT has good tonal range.

Friday, September 28, 2012

A photograph by Raymond Meeks
Though the foreground is very dark and sort of muddled, it really sets of the sky and makes the stars look beautiful. I think the darkness of the photo works for it. I also like the composition.

A photograph by Ryan McGinley, who was my subject for my final project last year.
I think this picture is really beautiful, despite some elements in it that would normally be considered flaws. I think the centering of the subjects and the uneven horizon line work for it.

Monday, September 24, 2012

A photograph by Alan Sailer, an artist famous for his high-speed photographs of explosions and gunshots. I like the symmetry of this picture, as well as the fact that the crumbled Smarties are making a rainbow pattern. It's a very unique and oddly beautiful photograph.
Pretty rad.
The only thing that bothers me is that the wrapper is slightly cut off. It just bugs me.

Thursday, September 20, 2012

I'm a big fan of sun-glare, and the sunlight in the background gives the photo a warm feeling, which I also like and utilize often. I also chose it for the frame. I think it looks rad.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

A photo by Lillian Bassman
It looks almost unreal because of the heavy contrast, as if it were photoshopped or taken out of a comic-book advertisement. It's strange, but there is something appealing about it. The model's dark makeup and expression are quite arresting.

Friday, September 14, 2012

I really like the texture and detail in this photo, as well as the tonal range. It feels both hyperreal and ethereal. The plain black background seems almost mysterious, and further serves to make the subject stand out. Additionally, the amount of Yolandi Visser in this image is also desirable.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

A photo by Richard Avedon, the artist I'm considering for my project. Aside from the obvious appeal in the colours, I really like the texture of this photo and the way the subject both fits with and stands in contrast of the background.

A building in Chicuque, Mozambique. Taken from the beach at an obscenely early hour.

I Don't Like Birds

But for some reason I took a lot of pictures of them while visiting the Kruger Wildlife Park in South Africa.
At least they're cool birds.

A lilac-breasted roller.

A glossy starling.

A fish eagle, which I assume is closely related to our bald eagle.
